A thick slab of rose quartz is cute to outline the shape of a heart. A poplar use for rose quartz is as a puffed heart for a necklace or just as a stone. It can be the centerpiece of a project or as tumbled stones or beads. It is usually fairly inexpensive, easy to cut into shapes, and very attractive to any gem enthusiast. Rose quartz might be one of the most poplar stones in craft jewelry making for a few reasons. ![]() The hardness or softness of a certain mineral has to do with the strength of the chemical bonds. By contrast, diamonds have a rating of 10, making them nearly impossible to be scratched. For example, Talc has a Mohs rating of 1, and therefor can be easily scratched by any other mineral. It is usually occurs as massive, anhedral occurrences in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites. It is abundant, common, and found in large quantities at numerous locations around the world. Minerals get their ranking based on the ability to visibly scratch another. ADVERTISEMENT What is Rose Quartz Rose quartz is the name used for pink specimens of the mineral quartz. It was created in 1812 by German geologist and mineralogist Friedrich Mohs, and rates mineral from 1 to 10. ![]() The Mohs scale is a scientific measure, used to describe the density and hardness of a certain mineral. It looks so much like jade that in South Africa, where it is common, it is known as 'Transvaal Jade.' It is frequently cut into beads, cabochons, and small sculptures. Perhaps the most important thing in prospecting is to know the characteristics of the district you are hunting! Like sports, there is a home court advantage for prospectors who have learned the particulars of the district in which they are working. In another district the most important may be areas colored red by high iron concentrations. In one place a certain type of rock may host all the deposits. What works well in one district may not always work so well in another. There is no one indicator of gold that always works. The geologic concepts and indications that are the most important for finding gold vary from location to location.
